VALLDEMOSSA
Located in an elevated part of the valley surrounded by olive
and almond trees in the Sierra Tramontana, Valldemossa is considered
to be the place where Mallorcan tourism starts. All thanks to
the composer Chopin, who eloped here with his lover George Sand
in 1838, and rented a monk’s cell to escape the paparazzi.
You can visit the cell – in the Reial Cartoixa Monastery,
which also has a modern art museum. Valldemossa is also home to
the Costa Nord cultural centre, where the commentary is given
(not in person) by the film star Michael Douglas – a fan
of the area since he bought a house here 20 years ago. Costa Nord
also hosts a season of concerts each summer.
This charming village is a highly regarded health resort and tourist
centre. A short drive away, down a narrow and sharply winding
mountain road, is Valldemossa port, a fishing village with a sleepy
pebble beach and beautifully clear water.
Though buzzing with tourists during the day, particularly in summer,
Valldemossa is a tranquil village which returns to its quiet self
at night.
Given a lack of long, sandy beaches and entertainment on tap in
this part of the island, those who buy second homes here looking
for beautiful countryside, tranquillity, excellent restaurants
and somewhere with a sense of history.
New-build apartments or small one-bed townhouses in the village
cost from 250,000 euros. A detached four-bedroom family house
costs from 700,000 euros and country villas or fincas can cost
anything upwards from 800,000 to six million euros.
