MOJACAR
Mojacar is Almeria’s best-known and most established holiday
resort. Less known is that Walt Disney was born here. It is also
the town with the largest number of foreign residents in the province.
This is a beautiful corner of Spain, with Mojacar’s whitewashed
houses and honeycomb of cobbled streets perched on a hilltop overlooking
the pristine sea and long sandy beaches.
This beautiful Moorish fortress town and its views has inspired
many artists and writers since the 1960s, when the mayor gave
away land for development to stimulate the dwindling population
and the town became a thriving art colony. It then became a thriving
holiday resort, with the contruction of hotels and villas along
the shoreline, and it has since grabbed the attention of many
holiday home buyers, so property is more expensive here than in
other resorts along the coast. Local attractions are Mojacar’s
Wednesday street market, the Marina de la Torre golf course and
the coastal village of San Jose.
Mojacar’s large foreign community has brought a cosmopolitan
atmosphere, with English, Italian and Chinese restaurants dotted
among the Spanish bars. In summer, the local waterpark is a big
attraction for families.
Mojacar’s property falls under either ‘playa’
(beach) or ‘pueblo’ (old town), with one-bedroom apartments
available near the beach from 115,000 euros and two-bedroom flats
from 150,000 euros. You can also find simple one-bedroom bungalows
in Mojacar Playa from 100,000 euros and villas from around 200,000
euros. In Mojacar Pueblo, 2km inland, one-bed apartments start
at around 150,000 and villas cost from 250,000 euros up to around
700,000 euros.
