MAGALUF AND PALMANOVA
Mallorca’s two biggest resorts, Magaluf and Palmanova,
gained a bit of a reputation for being cheap package holiday party
towns which attracted an undesirable crowd. Much has changed in
recent years, though. The worst high rise hotels have been demolished,
the whole area spruced up and – although still a place to
party at night – you might be surprised, by day, how beautiful
the beaches and scenery are here, with long, wide sandy bays sheltered
by pine-covered hillsides.
The central parts of town still flaunt the usual mishmash of British
and Irish bars, fast food joints and beach knick knack shops.
But the worst of the rowdiness has gone and the resorts are now
popular, good value holiday destinations for (mainly British)
families, young people and anyone who wants a self-contained resort
with everything within walking distance. There are all sorts of
watersports available, boat trips, booze cruises along the coast
and the Western Water Park is nearby.
Magaluf and Palmanova are also favoured spots among 50-plus British
buyers who want a holiday home in the sun – with a view
to retiring here.
Most properties for sale are apartments which can be let out to
holidaymakers for a good rate in peak season. Out of season, is
a very different scene and quieter than other areas in the south
west as many restaurants, bars and shops close down for a few
months.
