HUERCAL OVERA
The two medieval villages of Huercal and Overa merged to form
this charming whitewashed town – now the second biggest
in Almeria - which sits between branches of the Almanzora river.
It’s just 1km from the north-south coastal motorway and
has good local facilities including restaurants, hotels, a modern
hospital, a municipal swimming pool and leisure centre. Monday
is market day, with a lavish display of local foodstuffs and craftwork
such as embroidery. Besides that, the market is well-equipped
for visitors, with hotels, good restaurants and a modern hospital.
Surrounding the town are pine forests, almond, olive and orange
groves, and the beaches at Vera and San Juan are a 20-minute drive
away.
Tasteful new developments are emerging within walking distance
of the centre of town. Off-plan three-bedroom apartments start
at 110,000 euros or detached two-bedroom villas from 157,000 euros.
Modernised two/three-bedroom apartments in the centre of town
cost from 140,000 euros, or there is a wide range of rural properties
for sale, many in need of some repair, though you can also find
fully-renovated farmhouses from about 150,000 euros.
