Fuengirola sums up all those popular images of the Costa del Sol: a five-mile stretch of sandy beaches flanked by high-rise hotels and apartment blocks overlooking the sea, as popular with Spanish holidaymakers as with the thousands of Britons who come here every year. The local council has made big attempts to spruce up the place in recent years, widening walkways, planting palm trees and flower beds and providing plenty of benches along the promenade for those who just want to sit and gaze across the Mediterranean.

Fuengirola's beaches - Boliches, Gaviotas and Torreblanca - have been awarded a European blue flag for cleanliness and you can try a wide variety of watersports in now healthily clean water.

As you would expect from a major holiday resort which caters for all nationalities, many of whom do not stray beyond its confines during their holiday, there is no shortage of bars, restaurants, supermarkets, clubs, shops, Irish pubs and markets. There are aqua parks and zoos within a short distance or you can take a leisurely ride to Los Boliches in a horse-drawn carriage where you will see the sort of whitewashed old fishermen's houses that were once typical of Fuengirola.

Life doesn't stop here in winter either. The sun still shines and though holidaymakers may be thinner on the ground there is a large permanent community of foreign residents as well as Spaniards.

Though Fuengirola is not readily associated with historic gems, the town is dominated by an eighth century Moorish castle, and on the Paseo de los Boliches you will see a Roman temple arch, discovered by divers on the seabed.

Golf enthusiasts have the pick of La Cala, Santana, Torrequebrada, El Chaparral, Alhaurin, Lauro and Mijas Golf all within 15 minutes drive while tennis players can pop up the road to Lew Hoad's Campo de Tenis, one of the coast's longest-established and most popular tennis and social clubs for foreign residents.

If you are looking for a fun family day out, Fuengirola Zoo - just five minutes from the bus and train stations - is a very animal-friendly zoo which allows its inhabitants to wander around in simulated versions of their natural habitat, from lush tropical forests to watery recreations of the Nile and African plains. You can peer at the animals just a few feet away or take the moonlight visit in summer, to watch the nocturnal species until 1am . There's also a large play area and miniature farm for children. The zoo is generally open from 10am-8pm, and until 1am in July and August. Telephone 95 258 6892 to check times.

The main hotel in Fuengirola is the Hotel Pyr Fuengirola which is clearly visible from the main highway.

Another spot to while away an afternoon or two is the huge new Parque Miramar shopping centre, the second biggest on the Costa del Sol, next to Fuengirola's castle. There are 150 shops, a large Eroski supermarket, a 12-screen cinema, a food mall serving every type of cuisine imaginable, 2,000 parking spaces and two squares, Plaza de los Planetas, a restaurant and play zone in a planetary galaxy setting, and Plaza de los Mares, with an underwater backdrop.
