Most of the seven million visitors who land at Malaga airport each year head west to the major resorts. To the east, the coastline is comparatively undeveloped until you reach Almeria. But there are some exceptions worth the detour.

NERJA
Nerja is a pretty seaside town which despite its tourist masses maintains a very Spanish feel. The whitewashed streets of the old town have atmospheric local bars and small shops.

Nerja's centrepoint is the Balcón de Europa, a beauty spot perched above the sea and the focus of life throughout the day and night.

To each side are small but attractive beaches. Just out of town are the Cuevas de Nerja, where you can see the world's longest stalactite.

Past Nerja, the coastal road heads upwards to Salobrena, a whitewashed hilltop town set 2km inland within old Moorish castle walls surrounded by sugar cane fields.

GRANADA
Granada is unmissable, an easy detour up the N323 and one of Spain's great cities. The once largely Jewish town was invaded by the Arabs in the 8th century and throughout the city you see the striking Moorish influences in the architecture which is even seen in some of the amazing Granada hotels.

The town itself is full of history, atmosphere, character and beauty. But no visitor to Granada should avoid the trek up the hill to the Alhambra palace and gardens, built in the 14th century with its red-hued walls standing out against the backdrop of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada. Once you have explored the Alhambra, you can relax in the gardens and soak up fantastic views of the city surrounding plains.

SIERRA NEVADA AND ALPUJARRAS
The snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains rise to the south of Granada and offer great year-round trekking, including the Ruta de los Tres Mil for serious walkers, or skiing between November and late May at the Solynieve resort 28km from Granada. Further south are the Alpujarras mountains (the Moors last stronghold in Spain), a beautiful area of gorges and fertile valleys. The 70 or so villages and towns such as Pampaneira and Capileira are becoming popular with Spanish tourists.
