COLONIA SANT JORDI
Colonia Sant Jordi is the main coastal development on the south
east of Mallorca. Sant Jordi, a former fishing and agricultural
colony, is still a quiet holiday resort which has grown steadily
since the 1950s – though summers are relatively busy, when
the bars and restaurants are in full flow. The surrounding area
is dominated by salt plains and on the outskirts of Sant Jordi
are the St Joan’s Baths, the only natural spa waters in
Mallorca.
The fishing harbour still exists, and you can catch a small ferry
to the tiny, rocky island of Cabrera, once a pirates’ haven
which is totally undeveloped, having been designated a National
Park.
The real highlight of Sant Jordi, however, is Es Trenc beach –
said to be the best in Mallorca. This Caribbean-like idyll is
great for watersports. It’s also the island’s most
popular nudist beach. Nearby beaches Ets Estanys, Es Dolç
and Es Carbó are equally stunning.
West of Es Trenc, heading towards Cala Pi, you pass beautiful
and very quiet coastal villages such as S’Estanyol with
its small marina and houses a stone’s throw away from the
sea.
This beautiful area of Mallorca is a haven for outdoors types,
with golf courses at Son Antem and Son Gual near Llucmajor and
a new course in Algaida, a network of cycle tracks and stables
offering horse riding lessons and rides.
Two-bedroom apartments in Colonia Sant Jordi, near the beach,
cost from around 180,000 euros. Detached houses start at 400,000
euros.
