CALA D'OR
Towards the south-eastern tip of Mallorca, as the terrain becomes
hillier, you come to Cala d’Or, another popular holiday
resort, particularly with the British, but not one that has been
spoilt by high-rise buildings. Here, buildings are mainly two-storey
villas, houses or apartments, designed in traditional ‘pueblo’
style (reminiscent of Mexico) to blend in with the natural surroundings
and built around a series of coves – Cala Ferrera, Cala
Esmeralda, Cala Gran, Cala d’Or and Cala Llonga. Construction
is also increasingly creeping inland.
Apartments start at 150,000 euros, chalets cost from around 400,000
euros, and there is also increasing demand among British buyers
for semi-detached and terrace houses on urbanisations with high
quality communal facilities. A large two-bed house of this sort
will cost from around 360,000 euros.
As more residents come to live here permanently, rather than just
visit their holiday homes, the cultural and local community life
is blossoming. However, if you are thinking of relocating with
children, the nearest international schools are in Palma, and
tuition in Spanish schools is in Catalan.
Cala d’Or has plenty of facilities though to keep families
entertained on holiday, from tennis courts and archery to sailing,
diving, glass-bottomed boats, discos – and a harbour to
moor your luxury yacht.
