This historic small town of gently sloping streets, orange trees and Moorish-style mansions is dominated by the huge cathedral in the main square, the symbol of Benissa. Typically it's photographed at its best with the purple-tinted mountain ridge behind, and with the cooling palm trees and fountains to its side.
Benissa's old centre is beautifully preserved, owing its character to the town's many inhabitants from the Romans to the Moors. The town provides a peaceful retreat from the crowds on the coast, though is still within a short drive of lovely beaches and nearby towns Moraira and Calpe, 5km away. Life there is still that of a traditional Spanish village, with a big emphasis on local festivals throughout the year. There is a good choice of local restaurants and bars and the nearby mountains offer plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling enthuasiasts. There are also riding stables nearby, Ifach golf club, two gyms and a town swimming pool.
There is property at all price brackets available. At the top
end,in the hills overlooking the town are new developments such
as the luxurious El Magraner, with spacious villas costing about
£500,000. Other new urbanisations in Benissa have villas from
£240,000. There are rural fincas in need of renovation for about
£50,000 or central one-bed apartments for about £60,000.
