Even those who have never been feel they know Benidorm. The once
unassuming fishing village has carved a reputation over the past
few decades as the king of package tourism: the largest resort
in the Med, attracting four million tourists each year to its
high-rise hotels. One in four of its 67,000 inhabitants are foreign.
But directly behind the popular resort lies beautiful unspoilt mountain scenery which provides a perfect place for picnics, walks or cooling days out to escape the summer crowds and there are still niches in Benidorm's old town, such as L'Aiguera park and the clifftop square Placa del Castell with its blue-domed church, where you can escape for some tranquillity.
Benidorm has a split seasonal personality. In winter, the town is quiet and the pace is slow, enjoyed mostly by older residents who make the most of its many bowling greens, dance halls and the mild weather, to the more notorious Benidorm in summer, when the young crowd takes over and the older residents rent out their homes to escape the 24-hour party culture. Summer culture varies from the famous casinos, cabaret and themed bars near the beach and in the centre of town to plays and concerts at L'Aiguera park's two amphitheatres.
There are two excellent golden beaches, each 2km long - and even
though some 45,000 people flock to the sands on an average summer
day, a rigorous cleaning-up operation keeps the sand and sea here
among the cleanest in the world. The central Playa de Levante,
flanked by all the main hotels, is packed day and light with visitors
drawn to its white sand, clear blue sea and, at night, endless
choice of bars and nightspots. The quieter Playa de Poniente is
on the other side of the old town and preferred by families with
young children and older people. It, too, has a pretty promenade
which comes alive when illuminated after dusk. This is another
perfect strip to sit in a bar or restaurant and people-watch.
Expect central apartments to be in Benidorm's famous high rise
blocks. There are small flats in older blocks still available
from about £60,000 or apartments in new blocks with facilities
such as communal pools and tennis courts from £100,000-£150,000.
La Nucia is a popular residential district of Benidorm, 10 minutes
from the centre, with semi-detached villas from £150,000 and chalets
from £180,000. Rincón de Benidorm has new seaside development
with duplex apartments from £230,000 and villas from £300,000.
Other residential areas are Rincón de Loix and Rocas Blancas.
